THE PROBLEM

1) I have a really great ranch roping saddle that is sturdy and comfortable enough to work cows all day.

2) The saddle seems to fit my wide shouldered gelding poorly. It applies too much pressure in the upper part of the withers. This was shown evident by affected gait, as well as dry spots under my saddle pad exactly where pressure was being applied.

3) I don’t have the money to run out and buy a new ranch saddle…who does right now??? And do I have other options?

THE HYPOTHESIS

My Theory A saddle pad could be used to improve fit and ultimately my horse’s performance, in lieu of spending tons of money on a new saddle. I researched different saddle pads for about 3 weeks. Ultimately, I came down to 3 different saddle pads that would work for me:

THE EXPERIMENT

So once I made my decision I had to devise a test. Conveniently, the weekend after receiving my product I was
going out on a cattle drive in South Louisiana. This was tough ride, well above an advanced level of riding. So, I figured why not try it here. Prior to taking this saddle pad on a field trial, I did try it on my horse in an arena setting.

CURRENT STATE

Below are photos that show the saddle and pad I was originally using. As you can see there is pressure associated with the narrow gullet.

Below are photos that show sweat patterns from the saddle and pad I was originally using. As you can see, by the dry spots there is pressure associated with the saddle fit issue.

FUTURE STATE

Below are photos that show the Thinline prior to me talking into the field, using the same saddle as the “Current State”. As the photos show the pad pinches less in the wither area because it’s not as thick as the original 1” felt pad I was using.

THE CONCLUSION

ThinLine Western Felt Pro-Tech Correction Pad review by Tyler Parker

The Thinline Pad worked very well. The pictures show evenly distributed sweat patterns, which indicates no one area was over pressured. What you can’t see in the pictures is the way my horse performed. He was performed well all day. He was comfortable, moved like a cat, and was locked in on the cows. JR was doing his job and was excited to be doing it. Not to mention, I could feel littlest movements in his back which helped him and I tremendously. First, I’ll start by saying I’m not a professional trainer or rider by any means. I’m just an average person that has grown up with horses his whole life. That being said, because of my exposure I do have pretty good working knowledge of how to ride a horse and how a saddle should fit. I, like so many people, have a few saddles in my arsenal, but none of them are universal fitting. And of course, none that really fit my new horse, JR, that I picked up a few months ago. My main working saddle has a 6 ¾ inch wide gullet which just isn’t wide enough for JR. He’s big, stout, and wide at the shoulders. Because of this, my main saddle was pinching him on his upper withers and causing him to have, what I would call, an affected gait. He just wasn’t moving out like I know he could. So, after much research I landed on purchasing a Thinline Correction Pad to try and relieve the pressure caused by the less than ideal fit issues. I immediately put this pad to use. I took JR on a rugged cattle drive in the South Louisiana swamp. We rode in 10 miles, caught cows, and drove them back out another 10 miles.

Whether we were crossing marshes or sorting cows, JR did fantastic and moved like the saddle was made for him. In addition, I could feel things I my horses back that I never felt before. I literally could feel the twitching in his back muscles as he was trying to shew flies. No matter what saddle you have, I highly recommend this product to supplement your horse’s comfort level and ability to perform. You won’t be disappointed.
